Distractions are annoying, aren’t they? You’ll be at work, trying to finish an important task, and your friend sends you a video that you just HAVE to watch right then. Or maybe you have so many tasks lined up that you are trying to do all of them together and end up feeling overwhelmed!
Nowadays, how good you are at work depends on your efficiency and productivity of your tasks and honestly, it is hard to be productive if you lack the ability to focus. You might be greatly talented, but if you can’t focus on the work at hand, you cannot give it your all which affects your performance at work!
There are certain medical conditions that also make it difficult for people to focus (ADHD, etc). So, to help you do a great job at work, here are the tips you can use to boost your concentration and get going with the task list
Before you get into any heavy work, relax. Take a walk around a park, doodle, call up a friend, anything that makes you calm. Once you are calm, you’ll be able to rationalise and focus better on the task at hand. It makes to recharge and bring your best to the table.
- Prepare your self
There is nothing worse than plunging into anything unprepared. You need to prepare your mind regarding the type of work you are about to do, how to do it, how much time it should take, etc. Taking 5 minutes to lay down this framework in your mind, helps you get into the depths of the task better.
- One task at a time
While multi-tasking is a great way to get things done faster, it is not something you should turn to at work. Why? Because if you are already thinking of another task while doing something, you won’t be able to do either in the best way. So take it one step at a time.
- Write it down
Writing down your task list helps you get a clearer picture of the work that is in store for you. It also helps you prioritise the tasks and decide how much time you want to spend on which.
- Listen to music
Music has been scientifically proven to calm you down and boost concentration and focus while studying or at work. It helps you unplug from the distractions and focus on the is in front of you. So, plug in those earphones and get your groove on.
- Take short breaks
Don’t attempt to complete all the tasks in one sitting. It’s a fatal mistake that is only going to leave you feeling exhausted and tired. Instead, schedule short breaks for you after every 1-2 tasks. This will help you recharge and your energy back for the remaining work.
- Reward yourself
We humans are kind of greedy aren’t we. We don’t like doing anything till we have a motivation for it, preferably some kind of celebration at the end of a work we really did not want to do. Well, give in to that. Give yourself some small award if you manage to complete all tasks productively. It’s all about motivating yourself to get going.
Most people find it hard to focus on an unorganised, cluttered workspace. Because you have so much lying around, you get easily distracted. Take some time to organise your desk in a manner that soothes you and helps you focus. What’s more? You might actually find that pair of scissors when you need it next time.
- Set a timer
Set a time for checking your emails, taking a break, your tasks, etc… Set a time for everything. Not only will this help you plan your day, it ensures that you are working efficiently by focusing on only one thing at a time.
- Check your nutrition levels
Did you know that vitamin deficiency could also make it harder to focus at work? To ensure that you have a proper intake of all the necessary vitamin and minerals, take your medication and vitamin pills on time. All this will give you the energy to stay focused and efficient throughout the day.
