Who doesn’t want the best of expertise at affordable rates? Everyone! And when it comes to healthcare, there is no compromise. This explains the reason behind the boom in medical tourism in India, making the country a preferred destination for international patients.
Medical tourism is growing in leaps and bounds in India. In October 2015, India’s medical tourism sector was estimated to be worth US$3 billion. It is projected to grow to $7-8 billion by 2020.According to the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), the primary reason that attracts medical value travel to India is cost-effectiveness, and treatment from accredited facilities at par with developed countries at much lower cost. “Here you get top class treatment at par with developed countries, at almost half the price and that explains the increase by almost 20-25 per cent every year in international patients coming here for treatment. This trend has been observed in the last five to six years and it is increasing by the year,” said Dr.PuneetAgarwal, Head of Unit and Principal Consultant (Neurology), Max SuperSpecialityHospital, Saket.
While this is the primary factor drawing international patients, there are other reasons as well that add on this swaying the scale towards India. The ease of language is very essential and that is something that the patients really look out for. “Doctors here are fluent in English and that makes patients comfortable and choose India over some other Asian countries, for their treatment,” said Dr.Agarwal. Apart from this most of the corporate hospitals have a separate ‘international patient relations’ department where translators are also available for patients who do not understand the English language.
With the boom in medical tourism, the country also boasts of liaising agencies who look into end to end solutions for medical tourists. Starting with putting them in touch with the right doctors in India, facilitating their stay while in India to post treatment consultations, these agencies make the international patients-doctor networking smoother and hassle-free.
Delhi-NCR regions is amongst the top five cities that serve as epicenters of medical tourism in India. The capital of the country is a major pull for several international patients and the best factor that plays to its advantage is the connectivity. Since almost all international flights touch down here, it is like the gateway to the country. Moreover this region alone boasts of around 30 corporate hospitals which have swanky, plush ambience with the best rated doctors on their charts. The presence of the embassy offices of all the countries is another big advantage here for the medical tourists. If they have to increase the duration of their stay then proximity to the embassy is a big help.
The smooth synchronization of all these factors contribute to making this place the most preferred medical tourism destination, where international patients come seeking not just good medical treatment but a good experience in a country that prides in being a good host.
