Miracles do happen, and for 50-year-old Mrs. Mavdjuda Djalalova, a citizen of Uzbekistan, life has been all about hope. Being a proud mother of two and living a healthy life she never thought something so unpredictable would happen to her, but life has its own way of testing us! She was 48-year-old when she started having symptoms of unusual bleeding and pain. It got very severe and finally she decided to consult at a local hospital. At first, she was told that it’s just because of hormonal changes and was given prescription medicines. But to no avail, her condition further deteriorated and she was becoming weak. And after a gap of around six months, one of her relative referred her to a private doctor who straight away insisted her to undergo pap test and this time, the results came back showing Mavdjuda had abnormal cells on her cervix. She was diagnosed with Cervical Cancer.

As the time was passing by, Mavdjuda and her family were losing hope and due to non-availability of high-end cancer treatment centre in their country it was seeming impossible for her to get the proper treatment.

ROLE OF KONSULT

After two years of her sufferings, a ray of hope came to her life when she got to know about Konsult. Konsult team immediately responded to her and without losing any more time referred her and shared her reports to a Surgical Oncologist Dr Pushpinder Gulia, of Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurgaon, India. Konsult team helped her with all the official requirements like Visa and provided her a customized treatment plan and estimate. Mrs. Mavdjadu was accompanied by her husband and he gained the lost hope after meeting with Konsult team and was happy with all the help provided to them from the moment they arrived in India, a hassle free movement from airport to hospital and other facilities like local sim card, trained language interpreters and further accommodation in the vicinity of the hospital.

COURSE OF TREATMENT IN THE HOSPITAL

As soon as she arrived at hospital, she was admitted and relevant investigations were initiated. After a detailed physical examination and diagnostic studies like PET CT scan and biopsies it was confirmed that the cancer cells have not spread and is confined to her pelvis only, oncologist explained Mrs. Mavdjadu and her husband that only option which can treat her is the Pelvic exenteration. It is a major surgery also called ‘pelvic clearance’ in which all internal reproductive organs, bladder, and recto sigmoid are removed. Mavdjuda underwent ‘Anterior Pelvic Exenteration with Ileal conduit with diverting Sigmoid Colostomy’. Procedure was done as laparotomy is which incision was made over abdomen to explore the pelvis and remove the tumour. In Ileal conduit the surgeon removed a section of the small bowel and joins the tubes coming from each of the kidneys (ureters) to one end of it. They bring the other open end of the bowel out through a small opening in the skin of the tummy wall. Urine made by the kidneys will pass out of the body through this opening. Lower part of the rectum was also removed and remaining part was joined to the opening through a procedure called colostomy. After the surgery the abdomen was closed in layers-rectus and skin and she was shifted to ICU for observation.

POST-SURGERY

Mavdjuda responded well to the surgery and initially recovered well with colostomy and Ileal conduit functioning adequately. But it seemed like her problems were not going to end soon as on 7th day after the surgery her WBC started raising and on CECT scan it was found some loop formation with minimal fluid in her pelvis. She had to undergo a re-exploration surgery through same incisions done in previous laparotomy and Ileal loops were resected.

After the re-exploration Mavdjuda showed remarkable recovery with no further complications and after a week of observation she was discharged.

LIFE AFTER SURGERY FOR CERVICAL CANCER

As per Mavdjuda, it’s been a very emotionally and physically challenging experience for her and it had an enormous impact on her life and the lives of her husband and children. But, she is thankful to Konsult and team of doctors who guided her and supported in the most critical part of her life. She has regained her hope and slowly coping up with everyday challenges and looking forward to spend rest of her life normally.
