PREPARING FOR THE SURGERY

Not everyone can undergo facelift, there are certain factors which is determined by the cosmetic surgeon in order to decide whether you are a candidate for face lift surgery. You will undergo a detailed physical and health history examination to determine if you can undergo facelift surgery. Several factors include, skin type, skin elasticity, strong bone structure, loose skin on face or neck. Also you should be generally healthy and don have any major co-existing medical conditions which can lead to complications post-surgery.

You will be instructed to perform various lifestyle modifications such as you will need to stop smoking for at least two weeks before and two weeks after the surgery. Certain medications and nutritional supplements, can also cause post-surgical complications, so you may need to alter your medications as per your surgeon’s instructions.

ON THE DAY OF THE SURGERY

Type of anaesthesia is decided on the basis of intensity and length of the face lift surgery. Usually local anaesthesia is administered where you are relatively alert during the procedure, although, general anaesthesia always remains an option. Incisions are made at locations where scars won’t be visible or remain hidden such as below hairlines. Usually incision begins behind the hairline on the side of the head, somewhat above the forehead. It then follows the hairline down to the ear, running along the crease between the ear and the cheek, wrapping around the earlobe, and continuing into the lower scalp under the hair. After making the incision, surgeon will remove excess fat tissues and skin to tighten the surrounding muscles and improve the appearance of the facial skin. After making the incisions, the surgeon will lift the facial skin from the underlying tissue.

POST-SURGERY

After the surgery you will be kept under observation in a recovery room. You may feel nauseous because of medications which will subside as soon as the drugs leave your body. You may need one-night hospitalization and drainage tubes will remain for 48 hours. You may experience swelling and discomfort, particularly during the first day, but these symptoms can often be controlled with over-the-counter or prescription pain medication.

You will be provided with after-care instructions and how to clear drainage tubes at the time of discharge and will be asked to visit for follow-up check up to monitor the recovery status.

RECOVERY PROCESS

Successful recovery highly depends on post-surgery care at home. You should avoid any strenuous activities, but don’t be sedentary do mild walk or light exercises; wear bandage and keep it clean regularly, clear the drainage tubes as instructed; avoid wetting of face and use cool compresses on the eyes; stay away from sauna baths or pools, avoid using make-up and sleep with your head elevated for first two weeks. Swelling and bruising may persist for several weeks after a facelift, but as recovery progresses, patients will begin to see the results of their facelifts.
