Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) Overview

Native Valve is the valve we are born with. Severe AS occurs when the aortic valve does not open, as it should. This makes the heart work harder to pump blood through the body. This affects the health and limits our daily activities. In the below figure, you can clearly see how our valve functions. The artificial valve is placed and the procedure is called Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement.

What is TAVR?

TAVR stands for Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement. This procedure enables a new valve to be inserted within the diseased aortic valve. The new valve will push the leaflets of the diseased valve aside. The frame uses the leaflets of the diseased valve to secure it in place.

Surgical Valves vs TAVR

Some people have had their own valve replaced with surgery. Surgical Valves wear out over time. The surgical valve can start to fail. The TAVR valve might be an option for these people. Moreover, this procedure is less invasive and different from open-heart surgery. Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement uses a catheter to replace the heart valve instead of opening up the chest and completely removing the diseased valve. Other options for Severe Aortic Stenosis are Medication and Balloon Valvuloplasty (BAV) and Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement (SAVR).

How does TAVR Valve get to the heart?

The arteries in the body are like a system of roads. They branch out from the heart. There are different routes that surgeons use to get to the heart. These include:

  • An artery in your leg 1
  • An artery in your neck 2
  • A space between your ribs 3
  • Any other point determined by the doctor

How does TAVR work?

  • The doctor will make a cut and guide a long tube (sheath) into the artery.
  • TAVR valve will be placed in position within the diseased heart valve or failing surgical valve.
  • The TAVR will begin opening and closing to confirm it is working properly.
  • The thin, flexible tube will be removed, the cut will be closed, and the operation will be complete. During the procedure, the doctor will use machines that use sound waves or x-rays to look at your heart and arteries.

After the procedure

The doctor will give you instructions regarding certain things, which you have to take care of. You will have to limit certain activities. You will need to take medicine and have your heart checked from time to time.  The lifespan of valve after the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Surgery will vary from patient to patient. It has been tested to mimic 5 years of use without failure. Follow all care instructions to ensure the best possible results.
